WhatsApp supports lightweight markdown formatting across mobile (iPhone & Android), WhatsApp Web, and the desktop desktop client. Use this quick reference cheat sheet:

How to Format Messages in WhatsApp on Mobile & Web
iPhone (iOS)
Double-tap any word or sentence in the chat box to select it. In the context popover menu, tap Format (or the arrow ▶) and select Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, or Monospace.
Android
Tap and hold the text you entered in the input bar. Tap the three-dot overflow icon (⋮) in the floating toolbar, then choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, or Monospace.
WhatsApp Web
Type keyboard shortcuts directly (e.g. *bold*), or use keyboard hotkeys on Windows (Ctrl+B) and Mac (Cmd+B) while text is selected.
Combining Multiple WhatsApp Formatting Styles
You can combine multiple formatting styles by wrapping markers symmetrically. For example:
- Bold + Italic:
*_This text will be bold and italic_* - Bold + Strikethrough:
~*This text will be crossed out and bold*~ - Bold + Italic + Strikethrough:
~*_All three combined_*~
Note: Monospace (```) cannot be combined with other styles because it displays literal characters.
